Brick Re-pointing

Professional brick re-pointing to restore the appearance and structural integrity of your brickwork. We use traditional lime mortar techniques suited to period properties.

Over time, mortar joints deteriorate due to weathering and age, allowing moisture to penetrate the brickwork. Our re-pointing service removes failed mortar and replaces it with appropriate lime-based mixes that allow the wall to breathe — essential for the long-term health of period brickwork.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Why is lime mortar used for re-pointing period brickwork?

Period brickwork was originally laid with lime mortar, which is softer and more flexible than modern cement. Lime mortar allows moisture to evaporate through the joints rather than being trapped in the bricks, preventing frost damage and damp problems. Using cement on period brickwork can cause serious long-term damage.

How do I know if my brickwork needs re-pointing?

Signs that re-pointing is needed include crumbling or missing mortar, visible gaps between bricks, damp patches on internal walls, and mortar that crumbles when touched. If you notice any of these signs, it is worth having the brickwork assessed before further damage occurs.

Can you match the colour of existing mortar?

Yes. We carefully match the colour, texture, and profile of new mortar to the existing joints so that the re-pointing blends seamlessly with the original brickwork. We use appropriate aggregates and pigments to achieve an accurate match.

Do you re-point entire walls or just damaged areas?

We can do either, depending on the condition of the brickwork. For localised damage, we re-point only the affected areas. Where mortar has failed across a larger section, we recommend re-pointing the entire area to ensure consistent protection and appearance.
