FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Why use linseed oil putty instead of modern sealants?

With Dryseal glazing compound is the correct material for period timber windows. It remains slightly flexible as it cures, allowing the window to move naturally with temperature changes. It also provides a clean, authentic finish that is sympathetic to the original glazing style. Modern silicone sealants can look out of place and may damage historic timber.

How often does window putty need replacing?

Well-maintained linseed oil putty can last 20 years or more. However, exposure to weather, lack of painting, and age can cause it to crack and fall away. If you notice cracked, crumbling, or missing putty, it should be replaced promptly to prevent moisture damage to the timber frame.

Can you replace broken glass panes in period windows?

Yes. We replace broken or cracked glass panes as part of our glazing service. We can source standard float glass, laminated safety glass, or heritage glass to match the character of your windows. All glass is bedded in With Dryseal glazing compound.

Do you re-glaze Crittall and metal-framed windows?

Yes. In addition to timber windows, we re-glaze Crittall and other metal-framed windows. The process involves carefully removing old putty and glass, preparing the rebate, and installing new glass with appropriate putty or sealant for the frame type.
