FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is laminated glass and how does it work?

Laminated glass is made from two or more layers of glass bonded together with a tough plastic interlayer (typically PVB). If the glass is broken by impact, the interlayer holds the fragments in place rather than shattering into dangerous shards. This makes it significantly safer and more secure than standard float glass.

Can laminated glass be fitted to existing timber windows?

Yes. Laminated glass can be installed in most existing timber window frames as a direct replacement for standard glass. We bed the new glass in With Dryseal glazing compound to maintain the period appearance of your windows. No alterations to the frame are usually required.

Does laminated glass reduce noise?

Yes. The plastic interlayer in laminated glass acts as a sound-dampening layer, significantly reducing external noise transmission. This makes it an excellent choice for properties on busy roads or in noisy urban environments, providing a quieter and more comfortable living space.

Is laminated glass suitable for listed buildings?

Laminated glass is generally well-suited to listed buildings and conservation areas because it can be installed within the existing frame without altering the external appearance. It is often the preferred upgrade for heritage properties where secondary glazing or double-glazed units may not be appropriate.
